The Concept: A reflection on the relentless pace of change and the illusion of permanence. Panta Rhei captures a city caught between centuries, divided by the only constant it has ever known: the current.

On the left bank, the heavy, imposing stonework of the Napoleonic era stands as a monument to history, empire, and classical endurance. Yet, just across the water, the skeletal silhouettes of modern cranes reach into the sky—a stark, industrial reminder of an era defined by rapid construction and an endless, impatient tomorrow.

Flowing between the old world and the new is the river. Fluid, unapologetic, and constantly moving, it acts as the great equaliser. This piece invites the observer to pause and reflect on the nature of our fast-paced reality. We build our monuments and erect our modern skylines, but Panta Rhei reminds us that empires rise and cities are being rebuilt, while the water flows on forever.

The Process: Like all pieces within the INDEX collection, Panta Rhei is born from a hybrid approach to modern image-making. Beginning as an original photograph captured on location, the scene is digitally reimagined and meticulously transformed to evoke the delicate, expressive qualities of a traditional blue ink and watercolour sketch. This synthesis of original photography and digital darkroom techniques bridges the gap between raw reality and artistic reverie.
